METLAY

Mike Metlay is the founder and sole owner of Atomic City, the leader and organizer of Team Metlay, and the producer/executive producer for all solo releases on the label.

He works as a nuclear physicist at the Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, and developed the ideas and environment of Atomic City during his years of travel to atomic installations like Oak Ridge's Building 6000 in his quest for a Ph.D. His employers, fortunately, judge his work in terms of concrete achievements and goals rather than clock-hours punched and time seen on the job, so he's able to pursue his dual interests of nuclear instrumentation development and electronic music production w ith few conflicts. Mike has a few papers on his research awaiting publication, and a couple already out there; you can email him if you wish a publication list. (Warning to non-physicists: it's fairly dry stuff.)

He also writes and edits role-playing game rules and scenarios, helps run a play-by-email role-playing game that's a variant of the out-of-print Traveller rules system, and maintains an occasional presence on an online multi-user community known as FurryMUCK. He collects and listens to a wide variety of electronic music, and is a fan of artists such as Mark Shreeve, Gary Numan, Anthony Phillips, and Steve Hillage, as well as Kit Watkins and the many artists on the Linden Music label. He runs small email lists for users of several of the synthesizers he owns.

Mike was raised in Pittsburgh, a city he loves dearly and would like to return to someday. He is an alumnus of Oberlin College (Arts and Sciences, Class of 1983), and received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1992. He and his wife Suzanne ha ve just been blessed with the arrival of their first child, a beautiful baby girl named Julia Grace, for whom Suzanne sees a great future as a coloratura soprano, and whom Mike plans to get started on the drums as soon as possible.
